About Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

Emotion is seen as the prime player in the drama of relationship distress. EFT provides a guide for understanding and normalizing many of the extreme emotions that accompany distressed relationships. The treatment goal of EFT is to secure bonding in the couple's relationship. It is about the here and now responses of the partners and the structure and the process of their interaction. According to Dr. Susan Johnson, the developer of EFT, it is the answer to the question many individuals in partnerships wonder, "Can I depend on you when I need you?"

Although the length of time a client is in therapy largely depends on the nature of the problem and the identifiable goals, EFT is designed to be implemented in 8 to 20 sessions of a couple's therapy.
